4. Doyens Of Peace: The latest Program crafted by COVA in collaboration with reputed civil society organisations provides a Platform to Youth of Southasia to create a new Grammar of Interactions to secure equity, prosperity and Peace in the Region!!

Violence in Society and Pathways to Peace

From communal violence within societies to wars between nations, identity-based antagonisms are reshaping political and social dynamics across the world. The rise in such violence is not accidental but driven by a set of structural, ideological and technological forces that are manifested through eight major challenges. These include social deglobalisation, political polarisation, divisive models of development, weaponisation of religion and nationalism, the construction of “others,” and the amplifying power of social media.

Over the past three decades, COVA has developed some strategies to address them through its Programs that include using development as a strategy for social integration, intra-faith reform initiatives, multi-faith social engagement, recreating transborder- global identities, digital counter-narratives and the rebuilding of compassionate societies through education and civic action.

This Activity Report of COVA will illustrate how COVA endeavoured to address these challenges during 2025-26.
A Brief Manifesto titled “A Globe of Religious and Ethnic Violence, Causes and Pathways to Peace” by Mazher Hussain analyses the eight interconnected challenges and proposes strategies to address them. It shows that sustainable peace requires not only political solutions but also the reconstruction of social values grounded in empathy, coexistence and shared human dignity.

Part III: Religions4Peace

Multi Faith Celebrations

All festivals across religions are celebrated with a reason and promote some values. It is seen that all religions promote many similar values and this realization itself can promote affinity and some mutual acceptance. Further, two to six festivals of different religions come within four to six weeks- especially in India.

A new practice that is emerging is celebrating all festivals during a period on any one convenient day as Multi Faith Celebrations.

Members from all communities are invited and Faith and Thought Leaders speak about the reasons for the festivals being celebrated, values they promote, their complementarity and commonalities. This often leads to discovery of shared ethical principles such as compassion, generosity and respect for human dignity. This reduces prevailing antagonisms and generates mutual respect and acceptance.

Another interesting dimension of Multi Faith Celebrations is common people across neighborhoods and communities inviting their neighbours to their homes to celebrate their festivals together. This can help build mutual understanding, reduce antagonism between communities and ensure greater cohesion and harmony in the neighborhood and society.

Many Faith Groups and Civil Society organisations across the country are coming forward to organise Multi Faith Celebrations. COVA has also published a booklet comprising 35 Festivals from 7 Religions titled:

Festivals of Different Religions- Celebrations – Messages – Values Promoted.

Intra Faith Initiatives

Most religions have been weaponised and causing mayhem in the world and need urgent corrections. But any attempt to criticise and correct any religion from outside could be counterproductive. One way would be the critique and corrections by its own religious leaders and other influencers but from within that religion- hence Intra Faith Initiatives.

History offers several examples of how communities have cleansed their of religions of abusive practices, resisted the politics of hatred and rebuilt social trust through Intra Faith Initiatives.

COVA has catalysed Religions4Peace- a national network of religious and civil society organisations to promote Intra Faith Initiatives and Muli Faith Celebrations.

As Part of Intra Faith Initiatives:

  • Faith Leaders assess and critique misuse, abuse or incorrect use of their own religion
  • Seek corrections to ensure their religion is not exploited or weaponised to bring discords and promote violence in society.
  • Invite Religious leaders from other faiths to address their festival congregations to promote mutual understanding and convey messages for peace and harmony,

COVA is able to secure good results in Hyderabad through Intra Faith Initiatives. Many Faith organisations and civil society groups are successfully promoting Intra Faith Initiatives in different parts of the county. Please Click the Link to READ MORE.

Part IV: Doyens of Peace – Southasia

A Pan Southasia Network of Civil Society Organisations, Youth and Trade Unions, Professional Bodies and Institutions interested in promoting Vision for Southasia and collaborating and participating in programs and activities of common concern of the region through Online and Offline Events and Programs by Member Organisations and Youth Groups.

Part V: Peace Through Cyberspace

A pioneering initiative of COVA was started in 2016 in collaboration with 8 countries of Southasia and Far East to prevent spread of fake news and hate through the net and use Cyberspace for peace.
COVA has two Training Programs viz. COFI and CHECKIT to equip activists, youth, professional and faith leaders to propagate positivity through cyberspace and decode and expose fake news. COVA has also started training its members in Artificial intelligence to promote peace.

Part VI: Peace Through Development

When development projects focus exclusively on particular communities or identity groups, they can generate perceptions of exclusion among those who do not benefit from them. These perceptions may foster resentment, distrust and hostility between communities leading to polarisation, hatred and violence.
Development programs that deliberately include participants from diverse communities can help build trust and cooperation between people from different and antagonistic communities that are brought together. Inclusive development therefore has the potential to serve as a powerful instrument for social integration and conflict prevention.
Right from its inception, COVA has been advocating for and practicing inclusive development in all its activities and also encourages all its members to adopt this practice. This strategy succeeded in bringing together communities in many sensitive areas to promote harmony and ensure Peace.
COVA implements Hyderabad Development and Peace Project in two Wards in Hyderabad to showcase the benefits of inclusive development.

Part VII: Empowering Youth

Part VIII: Resource Books

COVA commissioned and published 5 Resource Books during 2025-26.
Three Resource Books were on Career Options after Grade 10, Grade 12 and Graduation.
The fourth is a Handbook on Nutrition for communities published in both English and Telugu
An important Resource Book published during the year is based on 35 festivals of 7 religions titled: Festivals of Different Religions: Celebrations – Messages – Values
The Book shows that Festivals can become a good medium for understanding religions in an enjoyable way that will also inculcate respect for other faiths and traditions!
Where there is respect, there cannot be hatred and where there is no hate, the possibility of violence cannot arise.

Please Please Click the Link for the Report and to access all the Resource Books online.

Part IX: Scholarship for Orphans

COVA Peace Network provided scholarships for six students from low income group who have lost their parents or their fathers- who were the sole bread winners of the family.
All these scholarships are made possible thanks to 2 Endowment Funds that are started with COVA Peace Network and a donation to support education of orphan girls from the marginalised communities.Mr. K.R. Venugopal, former Secretary to 3 Prime Ministers of India, has generously instituted two funds to honour the memory of his father Mr. Kasba Ramaiah to support one Christian and one Muslim orphan girl to continue education.Another Fund is instituted to Honour the Memory of Col. A Journey Documented and Remembered
A special documentary produced by the Department of Mass Communication, Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) titled COVA@30 was screened. The film chronicled the genesis, evolution, and wide-ranging impact of COVA across local, national, and international spheres.

Additionally, a commemorative book titled “Chronicle of COVA@30: Service Through Social Transformations” was released. The book captures reflections from over 150 partners, volunteers, associates, and community members, offering deep insight into COVA’s grassroots and global engagements.

Expansive Reach and Lasting Impact
The reflections showcased COVA’s extensive work:
• In Hyderabad’s slums, the twin cities, and 9 districts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
• Across five other Indian states – Jammu & Kashmir, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Manipur.
• At national, South Asian, and multilateral levels, including advocacy at UN platforms.

COVA’s 30 priority causes and issues were highlighted, focusing on:
• Violence prevention
• Education and school reforms
• Financial inclusion
• Multi-faith and intra-faith peace initiatives

Compassionate Citizenship Program: A Beacon of Hope
One of COVA’s most celebrated initiatives is the Compassionate Citizenship Program, designed to transform school education by taking students beyond textbooks into real-world civic engagement and moral development.

The Government of Telangana’s Education Department has now formally included this initiative as part of the co-curriculum in 3000 schools, with a vision to eventually implement it in all 40,000 schools in the state.

Leaders and experts unanimously hailed this program as a critical need of the hour to nurture future generations of empathetic and responsible citizens.

Policy Influence at the National Level
COVA’s influence on national policy was also underlined:
The Finance Ministry of India adopted 9 out of 12 key recommendations from a COVA study presented during the G20 Summit in Russia (2013), titled “Critical Review of Financial Inclusion in G20 Countries with Focus on India.”
• Five of these were integrated into the MUDRA Scheme, including EMudra, thereby demonstrating COVA’s tangible policy impact.

Faith-Based Interventions for Peace
Recognising the growing trend of religious polarisation, COVA pioneered Multi-Faith and Intra-Faith Initiatives. These efforts, in collaboration with faith leaders across religions, aim to:
• De-escalate religious tensions
• Promote celebration of diverse religious festivals together
• Discourage the weaponisation of religion
Such initiatives have helped build community resilience, especially in communally sensitive areas of Hyderabad, contributing to zero incidents of violence in the city since 2012.

Condolences and Reflections for Global Peace
The event began on a solemn note with a condolence message delivered by Mr. Jeevan Kumar, commemorating the lives lost to violence globally, particularly in Gaza and Ukraine. His powerful words set the tone for the day’s reflections on peace, justice, and humanity.
A Tribute to Contributors
As a mark of gratitude, over 250 volunteers, staff members, academics, activists, and officials were honoured with mementos for their outstanding contributions over the years.
The inaugural presentation of the commemorative book was done through a PowerPoint presentation by Bro. Thomas, Secretary of COVA, and Ms. Aparna Adhikari, Treasurer of COVA.

Looking Ahead: A Legacy in Motion
Every speaker acknowledged that COVA has not just worked on issues, but on transforming lives. Its journey from local neighbourhoods in Hyderabad to international advocacy platforms stands as a testament to the power of community-driven change.

As COVA steps into the next decade, its foundational ethos – of compassion, equity, inclusion, and justice – continues to guide its mission of building a better society.

History offers several examples of how communities have cleansed their practice of religions of abuse, resisted the politics of hatred and rebuilt social trust through Intra Faith Initiatives.

PART VI: PEACE THROUGH DEVELOPMENT

Hyderabad Development and Peace Project

Development initiatives are often assumed to promote social cohesion and economic progress. However, in many cases, development programmes unintentionally reinforce social divisions by focusing exclusively on particular communities or identity groups, they can generate perceptions of exclusion among those who do not benefit from them. These perceptions may foster resentment, distrust and hostility between communities.

Such divisions can create fertile ground for political actors seeking to exploit social tensions. In this sense, development models that unintentionally segregate communities may contribute indirectly to polarisation and conflict.

Conversely, development programmes that deliberately include participants from diverse communities can help build trust and cooperation. People from different and antagonistic / conflicting communities can be brought together through development programs that they perceive to be beneficial and the resultant association and interactions with members of other communities could lead to mutual understanding and harmony.

COVA implements Hyderabad Development and Peace Project (HDPP) in two Wards in Hyderabad to showcase the benefits of inclusive development.

Another Fund is instituted to Honour the Memory of Col. Naem Ahmed by his family to support education of four orphan girls.

Part X: Refugee Facilitation Centre

Subsistence- Education- Medial and Livelihood Support for Refugees

Refugees from 6 countries are living in Hyderabad- majority are Rohingya Refugees from Myanmar.

Thanks to the generous support from our donors, COVA has been supporting most destitute refugee families since 2015 comprising widows, single mothers, elderly, orphans and chronically ill who cannot earn and need support to survive with dignity. Presently there are 196 most destitute refugee families that cannot survive on their own- these include 75 families who were receiving support through the USAID program that was discontinued by the American Government recently. As they were on the verge of starvation, COVA has included them also in its Adopt a Destitute Refugee Family Program with the hope that our donors will come forward as always to help these additional 75 families also to survive with dignity.

COVA also supports education of refugee students, funds for medical emergencies and grants to start small businesses.
